Meeting commenced at 1pm.

Questions/Observations:

A member sought clarification on how the Aleph tutorial proposed at the November 22 meeting of the committee differed from the work of the Tutorial Committee, with specific reference to that committee’s work on help screens.

The Chair submitted the Instructional Committee’s presentation targeted student needs as might be envisaged within instructional environments, from the perspective of instructing librarians. The presentation could, essentially, be seen as a sample instructional session on Aleph, which CUNY instructional librarians could refer their students to or use as a collective instructional resource.

A member suggested such a presentation could serve as a stopgap.

Agenda:

1.      Review what has been done so far regarding the Aleph online tutorial the

committee decided to create (at its November 22 meeting).

2.      Continue discussions on the state of library instruction in CUNY schools and

delineation of what the committee can do to facilitate progress, with specific attention to the possibility of constructing a CUNY-wide approach to meeting Middle States information literacy requirements.

3.   Create a panel to study the current state of library instruction at CUNY.

Re: Agenda item 1: Members who had prepared Aleph presentations pursuant to the submitted their presentations for review and comments. Reviews and comments focused on improving the presentations, and offered useful perspectives and insightful commentaries. Some members, however, expressed their disinterest in the creation of a concrete tool, preferring that the committee focus more on providing a forum for open exchange of ideas rather than taking on concrete tasks. Members were amendable to reviewing any final product with regards to the Aleph PowerPoint presentation, though it was agreed actual development of such a tool should be entrusted to a limited group. Francine Egger-Sider of LaGuardia, Alexandria de Luise of Queens College, Susan Voge of Lehman, and Edward Owusu-Ansah of Staten Island volunteered to form the group and work further on the development of the presentation.

Re: Agenda item 2: Issue not addressed, members electing to concentrated on forging a focus for the committee.

Re: Agenda item 3: Issue not addressed, members electing to concentrated on forging a focus for the committee.

Questions/Observations continued:

There was unanimous consent on the matter of the committee serving as a forum for the exchange of ideas. A member also suggested the possible organization of a workshop/forum in the spring semester, open to all LACUNY members.

Members agreed to think about topics for discussion and to submit those to Edward Owusu-Ansah, who was to compile a complete list of member-submitted topics. The list was to be mailed out to members for prioritization of topics and resubmission to Edward, who would tally the scores and compile a final prioritized list. Future discussions of topics were to follow the priorities established by the list.

Members agreed to the following meeting dates for the Spring 2003 semester, the meetings to be held in the Newman Library of Baruch College, Room 415 (Library Conference Room), from 2pm-4pm:

Friday February 28, 2003

Friday March 28, 2003

Friday April 25, 2003

Meeting adjourned at 3pm.
