NEW LIBRARY: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
MAY 16, 2003
The New Library: Challenges and Opportunities will discuss libraries and technological issues in the 21st century. Now more than ever, librarians are aware of the value and urgency of their roles as information specialists and educators in an increasingly complex globalized community. With the introduction of the Internet as a research tool a little more than a decade ago - along with the explosion of digital information - librarians are now responsible for harnessing, organizing and evaluating an overwhelming amount of free Web and licensed commercial resources.
This exciting, chaotic mix is compounded by growing professional demands to extend services - both onsite and remote - with more requirements for measurement, accountability and assessment in an environment of uncertain support. For this reason, structures and traditions historically guiding the library profession must be reconfigured.
